Autódromo José Carlos Pace

São Paulo, Brazil

About this circuit

Interlagos — officially the Autódromo José Carlos Pace — is the most consistent generator of dramatic Grands Prix on the calendar. A short, anti-clockwise circuit on the southern edge of São Paulo, it sits at 800 metres of altitude where engines lose roughly 10% of their normal-aspirated power and where weather can turn from blazing sunshine to torrential rain in 15 minutes.

Interlagos has hosted the Brazilian Grand Prix in most years since 1973. The current Lewis Hamilton-renamed straight commemorates a 2008 race that decided a championship in the final corner — and that's just one of dozens of weekends here that have produced unforgettable racing.

Key corners

Senna's S (Turns 1-2)
A heavy braking left-right complex immediately after the start, dropping from 320 km/h to 110 km/h. Named for Ayrton Senna, this is the only meaningful overtaking spot on the lap and the place where almost every Brazilian GP first lap throws up a surprise.
Curva do Sol + Reta Oposta
A long, increasing-radius left at 230 km/h that opens onto Reta Oposta — the back straight. Slipstream sprints from here into the Descida do Lago hairpin produce the bulk of the lap's wheel-to-wheel action.
Mergulho + Junção (Turns 11-12)
A downhill braking zone followed by Junção — a tight left that loads up over its second half. The slowest part of the lap and a frequent spot for off-line errors.
Subida dos Boxes / Last corner (Turn 15)
A long, uphill, full-throttle left that opens out onto the start-finish straight. The corner where Lewis Hamilton overtook Timo Glock for the 2008 World Championship in the final 100 metres of the year.

Strategy and tyres

Interlagos has medium tyre wear and high traction demands due to the bumpy surface. Two-stop is the dry-weather norm; one-stop is possible if the field bunches behind a safety car (statistically the highest probability circuit on the calendar). Altitude reduces engine power for everyone equally, but the impact on tyre cooling — overheating runs harder — is asymmetric across teams.

If you're going

Early November in São Paulo — average 24 °C, high humidity, frequent thunderstorms. The grandstand at the start-finish straight gives the most multi-corner views; the Senna S grandstand is the action seat. Bring rain gear; the weather radar is part of the strategic conversation.
