Circuit de Monaco

Monte Carlo, Monaco

About this circuit

Monaco is the slowest circuit on the F1 calendar and the one the sport refuses to leave. Three kilometres of public roads through Monte Carlo, lap times around 70 seconds, average speeds barely over 160 km/h — and an outright impossibility of overtaking that has only deepened as the cars have grown wider and longer. The race is decided in qualifying.

First held in 1929 and a permanent fixture since 1950, Monaco rewards the kind of millimetre-precise commitment that almost no other modern circuit demands. The barriers sit inches from the racing line; one mistake at Sainte-Dévote or in the tunnel ends the weekend.

Key corners

Sainte-Dévote (Turn 1)
A heavy braking right-hander immediately after the start-finish straight, dropping from 290 km/h to about 90 km/h. The first lap pile-up corner; almost every race has at least one incident here.
Casino Square + Mirabeau
The bumpy uphill drag past the Casino, blind crest into a left-right complex, then the tight Mirabeau hairpin. The cars dance over expansion joints in the tarmac that no purpose-built circuit ever has.
Loews / Grand Hotel hairpin
The slowest corner in F1 — taken at around 50 km/h in 1st gear, full lock. A car's mechanical grip and turning radius matter more than its aerodynamics here.
Tunnel + Nouvelle Chicane
From dim tunnel light to harbourside daylight in 200 metres, and into the heaviest braking zone of the lap (290 → 90 km/h). The DRS-zone overtake spot, but only in a moment of total risk acceptance.

Strategy and tyres

Tyre degradation is essentially zero — the corners are too slow and the surface too smooth to wear a Pirelli compound out. One-stop strategies are the default, and pole position has won the race in the majority of modern Monaco Grands Prix. Safety cars and red flags reshuffle everything; teams keep at least one extra hard set untouched in case of a mid-race neutralisation.

If you're going

Late-May warmth, mild breeze off the harbour, occasional thunderstorms — the Côte d'Azur in early summer. Casino Square and the harbour balcony seats are the iconic vantage points; the cheap-seat option is the rocky bank above the Piscine. The grid is the only paddock walk in F1 where the public is roughly six metres away.
