Autodromo Nazionale Monza

Monza, Italy

About this circuit

Monza is the temple of speed. Five flat-out kilometres through the Royal Park north of Milan, four DRS zones, the lowest aero downforce setup any team will run all year, and lap-record speeds that no other modern circuit approaches. The fans — the tifosi — have made Ferrari's home race the loudest crowd in F1.

Monza has hosted a Grand Prix every championship year except 1980. The circuit's character has stayed largely the same since the chicanes were inserted in the 1970s to slow cars down: long straights, three slow chicanes that ruin lap-time but create overtaking, and the high-speed Curva Grande and Parabolica that test commitment.

Key corners

Variante del Rettifilo (Turns 1-2)
The first chicane after the start: a heavy braking from over 340 km/h to about 90 km/h for a tight right-left. The single most chaotic first lap corner of the year — sausage kerbs and grass edges punish anyone trying to cut.
Curva Grande (Turn 3)
A long, fast right-hander taken flat or with a small lift in current cars. The corner where slipstream battles play out — the leading car ends the corner with the trailing car right on its gearbox heading into the second chicane.
Lesmo 1 + 2 (Turns 6-7)
Two right-handers in quick succession at around 220 and 250 km/h. The only meaningful aero-dependent corners on the lap; cars set up for low downforce run wide and wash speed.
Parabolica (Turn 11)
The last corner — a long, decreasing-radius right that loads up over its second half before opening onto the main straight. Get it wrong and the entire next lap, including DRS into Turn 1, is compromised.

Strategy and tyres

Low aero, high straight-line speed, low tyre wear — Monza is one of the easiest one-stop races on the calendar. The strategic interest is in the slipstream cooperation between teammates in qualifying (Mercedes' famous tow trains in 2019) and in the safety-car timing. Soft compounds last longer here than the headline speed suggests because the corners are few and short.

If you're going

Early September in Lombardy — average 25 °C, dry, occasional thunderstorms. The Parabolica grandstand and the Variante Ascari hill give the best views; the grandstand under the iconic Ferrari banner at the start-finish straight is the priciest. Grid invasions have been a tradition since the 1950s; expect a wall of red after the chequered flag.
