About this circuit

Spa-Francorchamps is the longest circuit on the calendar at 7.0 km, the highest in elevation change, and the one most consistently cited by drivers as their favourite. Carved through the Ardennes forest of Belgium, it has a microclimate that can produce dry sectors and wet sectors on the same lap — and the most photographed corner in F1 in Eau Rouge–Raidillon.

First raced in 1925 on a 14 km road circuit and shortened to today's layout in 1979, Spa is where commitment is tested at speeds the rest of the calendar barely touches. The Kemmel Straight reaches over 320 km/h; the run from Eau Rouge to Les Combes covers nearly two kilometres of essentially full throttle.

Key corners

Eau Rouge / Raidillon
The defining corner of F1. Downhill into a left, immediately uphill into a steeply climbing right-left over a blind crest. Modern cars take it flat at over 290 km/h; the lateral and vertical loads compress drivers into their seats at over 4G.
Les Combes (Turns 7-8-9)
The big braking complex at the end of the Kemmel Straight: 320 km/h to 110 km/h into a tight right-left-right. The most reliable overtaking spot on the lap, especially with DRS deployed on the straight before.
Pouhon (Turns 10-11)
A long, double-apex left taken in 7th gear at over 270 km/h. The corner that exposes a chassis with directional stability problems faster than any other on the calendar.
Bus Stop chicane (Turns 18-19)
The final corner — a slow chicane that ends the lap and feeds onto the start-finish straight. Kerbs are used aggressively; cars regularly leave the chicane on three wheels.

Strategy and tyres

Spa is medium-degradation but high-energy: the long, fast corners load the rears for sustained periods and managing temperature matters more than managing wear. Two stops are normal in dry races; one is possible if the medium-hard window stretches. Weather is the deciding variable — Spa has produced more rain-affected races in the modern era than any other circuit, and the safety-car probability is correspondingly high.

If you're going

August in the Ardennes — daytime average 18 °C, frequent showers, occasional cold snaps. The grandstands at Eau Rouge and Les Combes are the marquee tickets; general-admission slopes around La Source and Pouhon offer good views at lower cost. Bring waterproofs whatever the forecast says.
