Antonelli wins the British Grand Prix as Russell's late puncture settles the argument
Kimi Antonelli won the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on Sunday in a race that swung on traffic, tactics and tyre failure before finding its answer on lap 57, when a rear-left delamination on George Russell's Mercedes removed the last real challenge to a driver who, at 19, is running the world's fastest circuit like he owns it.
The championship lead is back to 57 points with 13 rounds remaining. Austria had tightened the fight. Silverstone has reopened it.
Safety Car on Lap 1
The 140,000 fans at Silverstone did not travel to watch a clean race. They got their money's worth. On lap 1 at Abbey, Liam Lawson's Racing Bulls turned across the nose of Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari โ light contact, major chaos, a Safety Car before the field had completed a single timed lap.
The restart on lap 5 scrambled the order into something new: Antonelli first, Russell third behind Piastri, Hamilton sixth behind his own teammate Leclerc. When Piastri made an early tyre swap under the safety car window, Russell leapt to second and the race took its true shape.
The Pass at Stowe
For thirty-two laps, the British Grand Prix was a two-car time trial. Russell closed a 1.2-second gap to Antonelli through the middle stint, sat on his rear wing from lap 30 to 36, and waited for the moment that never came from him โ because on lap 37, Antonelli provided it himself.
Coming onto fresher mediums, the Italian began a measured attack through the high-speed complex, drew alongside through Chapel and committed on the inside of Stowe with 200 metres of braking room and no room for doubt. The pass was clean, brave and decisive. "That's what Silverstone is for," he said on team radio, and 140,000 people agreed without knowing it.
Russell never found the response. Five laps from home, his rear-left delaminated on the Hangar Straight โ a catastrophic failure that left him limping to the pits at 60 km/h, rejoining on fresh hard tyres in second place, the championship damage limited to seven points rather than the twenty-five that a retirement would have cost him.
"I had the pace to fight back," Russell said. "The tyre just went. I can't control that. The pace today was real โ we keep taking that forward."
Hamilton Third, Norris Fourth
Hamilton brought the crowd to its feet with a late move on Verstappen at Stowe to secure third โ a podium, not a win, but the kind of result that reminds the Tifosi why they track this team's Ferrari gamble. Norris recovered to fourth after an early hydraulic scare; Piastri fifth.
Championship
Antonelli's lead has stretched to 57 points โ the widest it has been since the opening rounds. Russell's pace is not the problem. It never has been. The problem is that when the race offers both drivers the same opportunities, Antonelli keeps taking the better one.

I'm Alex Da Costa, a systems engineer with more than ten years of experience designing and maintaining data-heavy infrastructure. I've been watching Formula 1 since the 2005 season โ Alonso's first championship, the year Schumacher's seven-title era finally cracked โ and it's been an obsession ever since. Pit Lane F1 is what happens when that IT background meets a lifelong F1 habit. I started this site because the big outlets cover the headline result but rarely the data underneath: why a pit-stop window mattered, how a circuit's lap-record history actually compares, what every driver has done at every venue. So I built it. Race recaps for every Grand Prix since 1950, head-to-head career comparisons, telemetry replays for 2024 onward, and per-circuit deep dives โ all from open data sources, fact-checked against multiple references, and written in plain language. The site is run independently. No team, driver, or commercial partner influences what gets published.
