Norris steals the show from Verstappen at Zandvoort as Antonelli extends lead to 59
Lando Norris won the Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort on Sunday to hand McLaren their first victory of the 2026 season, and he did it by holding off Max Verstappen on a circuit built for orange โ 105,000 of them in the grandstands. Kimi Antonelli finished second and extended his championship lead to 59 points over George Russell, who completed the podium in third. The season now breaks for summer.
Zandvoort gave Norris everything it usually gives Verstappen โ the crowd, the noise, the pressure โ and Norris absorbed all of it. "Honestly, it feels unreal," he said on the podium. "To win here, in front of this crowd. Max's crowd. That makes it something else."
McLaren's Long-Awaited First
McLaren had finished on the podium four times before today but not once on the top step. Their 2026 car had pace but lacked the single-lap consistency that wins races, and Zandvoort โ with its banking, its tight stadium section, and its unforgiving gravel โ isn't a circuit that forgives a car that's one degree off in the high-speed. Norris threaded the needle from pole, led every lap to the first stops, and re-emerged in second behind Verstappen after the pit cycle.
The decisive moment came on lap 51 when Carlos Sainz's Williams beached itself in the barriers at the final chicane and brought out the safety car. Norris was close enough to Verstappen โ just 1.3 seconds โ that the restart lap would decide everything.
The Restart
Verstappen got a clean restart from the lead. Norris was on his outside at Tarzanbocht and โ in a move that the commentary box and the grandstand both took a moment to process โ went around the outside, held the line, and came out ahead. "I don't think I've ever done that at Turn 1," Norris admitted. "I just went for it."
Verstappen tried to respond into Hugenholtz. He didn't have the traction. Norris was gone.
Antonelli and Russell's Races
Antonelli had a faultless race from third on the grid. He was never in contention for the lead โ the pace gap between the three cars at the front and his Mercedes on the medium compound was real โ but second was never really in doubt either. He crossed the line 4.2 seconds behind Norris and took 4 points from Russell in the championship. With the season heading into its final ten rounds, those points feel like something.
Russell started fourth and finished there, until Verstappen dropped to fourth after failing to reclaim Norris. Russell therefore inherited third on the road โ his 11th podium in 2026, but his least satisfying. He needed a win. He got a watching brief.
A McLaren Afternoon, An Antonelli Season
The real story of the Dutch GP wasn't Norris's win. It was what didn't happen: Verstappen's home race ending without a trophy, and Russell failing to cut the gap. The summer break arrives with Antonelli 59 points clear, 10 rounds remaining, and the arithmetic beginning to close.
Antonelli needs 66 points from the final 10 rounds โ including sprints โ to be guaranteed the title regardless of what Russell does. At his current scoring rate, he'll reach that before Abu Dhabi.
"Summer is good for thinking," Antonelli said. "I'll enjoy it. And then we go again."

I'm Alex Da Costa, a systems engineer with more than ten years of experience designing and maintaining data-heavy infrastructure. I've been watching Formula 1 since the 2005 season โ Alonso's first championship, the year Schumacher's seven-title era finally cracked โ and it's been an obsession ever since. Pit Lane F1 is what happens when that IT background meets a lifelong F1 habit. I started this site because the big outlets cover the headline result but rarely the data underneath: why a pit-stop window mattered, how a circuit's lap-record history actually compares, what every driver has done at every venue. So I built it. Race recaps for every Grand Prix since 1950, head-to-head career comparisons, telemetry replays for 2024 onward, and per-circuit deep dives โ all from open data sources, fact-checked against multiple references, and written in plain language. The site is run independently. No team, driver, or commercial partner influences what gets published.
