George Russell ended a run of seven race victories for Kimi Antonelli at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, driving a measured Austrian Grand Prix to take victory over his Mercedes teammate and narrow the championship deficit to 50 points with 14 rounds remaining.
Russell first, Antonelli second, Max Verstappen third โ the result capped a sprint weekend in which both Mercedes drivers had played for every available point from Friday afternoon through to the chequered flag. Antonelli had won Saturday's sprint. Sunday belonged to Russell.
Sprint to Race: The Tactical Gap
Antonelli's sprint win on Saturday told a familiar story: he led from lights-out and held Russell at arm's length for eight controlled laps, banking eight points and reinforcing what had become the season's most reliable truth โ on raw one-lap pace, the Italian is peerless.
The race pace painted a more complicated picture. Both drivers started on medium tyres, tracked each other through the opening stint, and arrived at the first round of stops within a lap of each other. Antonelli pitted on lap 25 for hard tyres and emerged cleanly in second behind Russell. Russell stopped on lap 28 โ and the gap to the box and the stationary time were identical. The out-lap was not.
Antonelli lost 2.4 seconds behind an Alpine in the pit-exit blend line, the kind of traffic incident that most weekends absorb without consequence. Here, it cost him the lead. Russell emerged just ahead, held the position through the second stint, and brought it home 4.2 seconds clear.
"We knew the strategy could work if we got the timing right," Russell said. "I won't pretend the out-lap situation didn't help โ but you have to put yourself in a position where those moments can matter."
Antonelli was characteristically direct. "I lost time to traffic on the out-lap. That's it. The championship is still where it needs to be."
Verstappen's First Podium
Max Verstappen's third place โ his first podium of 2026 โ gave the Red Bull Ring grandstands something to celebrate after a season spent watching their team's aerodynamic reset fall consistently short of the front two. The Dutchman ran a measured one-stop on hard tyres, resisted Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari in the closing laps, and crossed the line to a roar from the orange-and-blue stands.
"I'm happy โ finally a podium," Verstappen said. "But it's not what I came here to do. We need more."
Championship Picture
With 50 points separating Antonelli from Russell and 14 rounds remaining, the arithmetic still strongly favours the Italian. Mercedes reliability has been impeccable all season, and Antonelli's qualifying pace has averaged a tenth faster than his teammate through the European flyaway swing. Russell needed this win. He got it. What he needs next is a run of them.

I'm Alex Da Costa, a systems engineer with more than ten years of experience designing and maintaining data-heavy infrastructure. I've been watching Formula 1 since the 2005 season โ Alonso's first championship, the year Schumacher's seven-title era finally cracked โ and it's been an obsession ever since. Pit Lane F1 is what happens when that IT background meets a lifelong F1 habit. I started this site because the big outlets cover the headline result but rarely the data underneath: why a pit-stop window mattered, how a circuit's lap-record history actually compares, what every driver has done at every venue. So I built it. Race recaps for every Grand Prix since 1950, head-to-head career comparisons, telemetry replays for 2024 onward, and per-circuit deep dives โ all from open data sources, fact-checked against multiple references, and written in plain language. The site is run independently. No team, driver, or commercial partner influences what gets published.
